CHENNAI: In less
than a month, about 13,000 IT professionals, doctors, policemen and healthcare
workers pledged their organs in a donation drive, Daan (Donate Organ, Donate
Life), jointly organized by HCL Technologies Ltd, Apollo Group of Hospitals and
Chennai Police in association with Indian Medical Association, Tamil Nadu
Cadaver Transplant Programme, and Mohan Foundation.
In 2008, Tamil Nadu began a cadaver donation programme, wherein a government-run registry networked with hospitals for organ sharing. Dr Sunil Shroff, founder, Mohan Foundation, said India has more than 2,00,000 patients in need of kidney transplants. The pledging drive, which began on February 29, will serve to create awareness, said Srimathi Shivashankar, associate vice president, HCL Technologies.
